Cerebral angiograms are used to diagnose any vascular diseases of the brain including arterial blockage. Angiograms are performed by the doctor injecting a contrast dye through the carotid or vertebral artery so they can see where the abnormality is located. Using X-ray and computer imaging, we are able to render 3-D images of arteries and veins.
Spinal angiography is similar to cerebral angiography in that the patient is injected with a contrast dye and X-ray images of the arteries and veins are collected and rendered in 3D through computer imaging. Spinal angiography is typically used to diagnose Spinal Dural Arteriovenous Fistula, and is also used in pre-operative spinal tumor embolization to examine arteries supplying the spinal cord.
